Dr. Syed Wajih Ahmad Naqvi (India) is since September 2012 the Director of National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, an institute he has been associated with for four decades, and an Adjunct Scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution since 2007. He carried out his post-doctoral research at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, and worked later at the Institute for Hydrospheric-Atmospheric Sciences, Nagoya, and the Centre for Tropical Marine Ecology and Max-Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, Bremen. Naqvi has made important scientific contributions in aquatic biogeochemistry, particular nitrogen cycling in anaerobic environments. He has been actively involved in planning and implementation of the IGBP projects (JGOFS, LOICZ, SOLAS and IMBER). He has been a member of several SCOR Working Groups and is currently on its Executive Committee. He also served on the Group of Experts for the Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of Marine Environment, including Socio-economic Aspects.
